Our data sources and limits

Sources tell you what a record means. They do not prove who made a call.

FTC Do Not Call complaints

Our complaint layer uses the FTC’s public reported-call data. Counts refer to imported complaint records associated with the number shown, not verified callers or unique people.

Source: FTC Do Not Call reported calls. Imported complaint filing dates: 2026-09-10 to 2026-10-15. Latest imported release: 2026-10-16. Last successful import: 2026-10-17T22:07:00+00:00. This is a partial snapshot, not the FTC’s full complaint history.

The FTC releases data on weekdays. This build imports releases when the importer is run; it does not claim continuous or automatic updates. A failed import keeps the last successful snapshot and its original dates.

Read the FTC dataset description. The FTC has not verified these reports. Caller ID may be spoofed, so a listed number may belong to someone who did not make the call.

How we count complaints

We count the accepted rows in the releases we import. Reimporting the same release does not add its records again. A corrected release replaces that release’s earlier rows.

Each retained row has a local identifier based on its file checksum and row position. Identical-looking rows within a release are kept because they may be separate complaints. Counts are not deduplicated people, incidents, or verified calls.

Release dates identify source files; filing dates identify complaint submissions. Neither is necessarily the date of the call. We do not combine FTC counts with community reports or another agency’s records.

Basic number context

An area code describes a numbering region. It is not a caller’s current location, a carrier lookup, or a verified identity. NANP toll-free numbers are not tied to a geographic location. US and Canadian geographic numbers are supported for lookup and community reports.

Canadian area codes come from the Canadian Numbering Administrator. Canadian geographic numbers are outside this site’s imported FTC snapshot. A Canadian result can show number context and any published community reports.

Some existing result pages also show public community reports. Those reports are distinct from FTC complaints and must be read with their source labels. They are not proof of wrongdoing.

Original number blocks and current carriers

Thousands-block assignments come from the public NANPA block report. We show the rate center and original block holder only when that exact block is present in our imported data. A block holder is not a verified caller or current carrier: individual numbers can be ported or reassigned. We do not infer a carrier from a whole exchange.

WhoseNo report summaries

WhoseNo retains its original reports. WhoseNum displays a short summary and a source link, while reports submitted to WhoseNum remain here. Imported summaries alone do not make a number page eligible for indexing.

Caller ID authentication is separate

STIR/SHAKEN is a system providers use to authenticate caller ID information carried with a call. A number typed into a web form does not include that call-signaling information, so this lookup does not perform an authentication check.

Read the FCC’s explanation of STIR/SHAKEN (PDF).

Missing records and corrections

Missing data does not establish safety. Coverage is partial, records can contain mistakes, and a number may have changed owners.

Ask for a correction or removal. A change on WhoseNum does not change an agency’s source dataset.

Independent, not government-endorsed

WhoseNum uses public information and links to official consumer guidance. The FTC and FCC do not endorse this service.

What is in this imported snapshot

The current import contains 275,143 complaint records across 234,181 US geographic or NANP toll-free numbers. These are unverified reports, not verified callers or unique people.

The table groups imported complaints by geographic area-code prefix. Toll-free prefixes are excluded from this table. Caller ID may be spoofed; these counts do not measure where scammers live or the risk of an area.
